Why Does Shopify Reject Image URLs?
During a product CSV import, Shopify's backend servers attempt to download every image linked in the Image Src and Variant Image columns, copy the file to Shopify’s CDN, and link it to your product.
If Shopify cannot download the image within a few seconds, the entire product import can stall or throw the error: "Image URL could not be downloaded / Media failed to load".
The 4 Main Reasons Media Links Fail
1. Unencoded Spaces in File Names
URLs cannot contain raw space characters. If a supplier filenames an image blue shirt front.jpg, the link must be encoded using %20:
https://cdn.example.com/photos/blue%20shirt%20front.jpg
2. Local Computer File Paths (C:\ or /Users/)
Shopify cannot reach files stored on your local hard drive. Linking to C:\Users\Documents\photo.jpg will always fail. Images must first be uploaded to a public CDN, Dropbox direct link, or Google Drive direct link.
3. Missing HTTPS Protocol
Shopify rejects unencrypted http:// connections and naked domains (e.g., cdn.example.com/image.jpg). All URLs must explicitly declare https://.
4. Password Protection or Expired Tokens
If your image host requires login credentials, CAPTCHA verification, or uses short-lived authenticated tokens (such as temporary AWS S3 pre-signed URLs), Shopify’s crawler will receive a 403 Forbidden or 401 Unauthorized status code.
How to Fix Media Errors Locally
Use the ShopiClean Image URL Scanner to inspect your CSV before importing into Shopify Admin:
- Automatically encodes spaces into valid
%20characters. - Prepends missing
https://protocols. - Flags any accidental local drive paths (
C:\) so you can fix them before starting the import.
