Shopify CSV Errors: “Options Are Not Unique”, “Handle Already Exists” and “Line Is Invalid (No Details)”

Last updated: 19 October 2026 • 8 min read

Short answer

These errors are about how rows are grouped into products. A handle identifies a product, and every variant under it needs a unique combination of option values. Look for duplicate variants, the same handle used twice, a product whose first row has no title, or an option moved to a different position.

How Shopify reads the rows in your file

Shopify uses the handle as the unique identifier for each product, and the first row of a product carries its full details. Per Shopify’s documentation:

  • In the first row of a product, you fill in all the product fields, including the first image URL.
  • In the following rows for the same product, you enter the handle again and skip the Title, Description, Vendor and Tags columns. You fill in the variant details and any additional image URLs.
  • A product can have up to three options. If a product has only one option, the Option1 name should be Default Title.

“Validation failed: options are not unique”

Shopify says this error appears when a product has duplicate options. For example, you may have set up two variants with the same option values, such as two Medium variants in Black. Shopify adds that if the option values really are unique, the same product might be duplicated elsewhere in the CSV under the same handle.

  1. Filter the file by the product’s handle and look at its Option1, Option2 and Option3 values together. Two rows with identical combinations are duplicates.
  2. Search the whole file for that handle. Rows for one product must belong to one product, not to two different products that happen to share a handle.
  3. If the rows differ only in something that isn’t an option, such as a SKU or a pack size, add an option value that tells them apart.

“Ignored line … because handle … already exists”

Shopify’s explanation is that the handle uniquely identifies each product, so each product in your file needs its own handle. There are two common ways to hit this message:

  • You gave the same handle to two different products in the file.
  • You re-imported products that already exist in your store. Shopify’s documentation says that when Overwrite products with matching handles isn’t selected, products that match an existing handle are ignored. If you meant to update them, select that option, after reading our guide to updating products safely.

“Ignored line … because it did not contain product data”

Shopify explains this as at least one product having a handle but no product title. The first row of every product needs a Title. One way this can happen is after a file has been sorted or filtered, because the row that held the title can end up below rows that don’t have one.

“Line is invalid (No details)” after changing option order

Shopify documents one cause for this vague message: the file tries to move an existing option value to a different option position, which conflicts with the variant options already on the product. Because variant options must be unique, the import fails. Shopify’s example is moving Size from Option 1 to Option 2 and adding Type as the new Option 1.

Shopify’s workaround is to use a temporary option name:

  1. In the file, rename the conflicting option temporarily, for example Size. with a period instead of Size.
  2. Import the file with the temporary name.
  3. Create a second file that changes the temporary name to the name you want.
  4. Import that second file to apply the final name.
Shopify warns that changing data in the Option value columns deletes existing variant IDs and creates new ones, which can break apps and integrations that rely on them.

Don’t sort or filter-and-save a product CSV

Rows for one product depend on their order, so sorting a product CSV can separate variants and extra image rows from the product they belong to. Shopify’s import documentation specifically warns that importing a file sorted in a spreadsheet editor such as Excel or Apple Numbers can cause products to lose their image links and their images.

If you need to sort, keep an untouched copy, make your edits on a duplicate, and check one product with several variants and images before importing everything.

What ShopiClean checks here

Disclosure: ShopiClean is our own product. Everything in this guide can be done by hand in a spreadsheet; the tool simply automates the checks. The scan and the on-screen 5-row preview are free, and downloading the repaired file needs a 7-Day Pass ($9).

What it does:

  • Flags variants that have identical option values, which is the situation behind “options are not unique”.
  • Flags handles that are used by products with different titles, which Shopify would treat as one product.
  • Flags a product whose first row has no Title, and names the handle and row. In our test, a product with a handle but no title was reported with the same “did not contain product data” wording Shopify uses.
  • Moves rows so that each product’s variants sit together, and tells you when it has done so.

What it does not do:

  • It can’t see your store, so it can’t tell you that a handle already exists there or that an overwrite will skip a product.
  • It doesn’t fix duplicate variants for you. It lists them, and you decide which rows are real.
  • It can’t detect that an option has been moved to a different position, which is what causes “Line is invalid (No details)”.
